Military Units

More than 33,000 Japanese Americans served during World War II in the US Armed Forces. Most served with the US Army in all-Nisei units led primarily by Caucasian officers.

100th Infantry Battalion becomes part of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, 1944
  • 100th Infantry Battalion replaces the 1st Battalion of the 442nd Regimental Team
  • The 1st Battalion of the original 442nd was left behind as a cadre unit
  • Original 1st Battalion is renamed and designated the 171st Cadre Training Battalion
  • The 171st Cadre Training Battalion becomes a training unit at Camp Shelby for replacements to the 100th and 442nd

Never deployed, remained in Hawaii for duration of the war.
Provided training facilities for troops deployed to the Pacific Theater.

Japanese American linguists sent by the Army to serve with units in the battles and campaigns of the Pacific Theater and the China-Burma-India Theater.
