Go For Broke National Education Center – Los Angeles, California

Position: Hawaii Regional Director

Introduction
The mission of Go For Broke National Education Center is to educate and inspire character and equality through the virtue and valor of our World War II American veterans of Japanese ancestry. We learn from our past, to improve our future. The legacy of the Japanese American soldiers of World War II stands today as one of the greatest examples in American history of how to effectively fight racial prejudice and social injustice to produce long lasting change.

We are looking for a Hawaii Regional Director to represent Go For Broke National Education Center at veteran and community gatherings throughout Hawaii. This position is designed to be a unifying presence among the different Nisei veteran clubs/organizations. They must have strong relational skills (i.e. emotional intelligence) and have the ability to connect with many different types of people. In addition, this person will help to advance the organization's educational and archival initiatives, and oversees the development and expansion of innovative educational programs to teach youth about the Nisei soldier legacy. A part-time position (20 hours/week) that reports to the President/CEO in Los Angeles, California.

Major Areas of Responsibility

Will work with Hawaii-based veteran organizations on our mutual goal of preserving and sharing the Nisei soldier legacy. Will be the liaison for GFBNEC's nationwide initiative to develop a national digital archives of Japanese American military service. Will oversee the rollout of a new curriculum for at-risk youth that is currently in the final stages of development and early introduction. Will explore opportunities to share the Nisei soldier story in public and private schools throughout the State of Hawaii. Will support Hawaii-based members on GFBNEC's Board of Directors and our Hawaii Regional Advisory Committee (HRAC). Will participate in national initiatives as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience in Non-Profit organizations
  • Bachelor's degree required, at least five years of professional experience in a general management role, ideally in a rapidly evolving institution
  • Highly organized and ability to wear multiple hats in a fast-moving environment; a driving force who manages toward clarity and solutions
  • A team player with a flexible and creative attitude
  • Equipping and empowering our nation to learn from our past for a better future!
  • Excellent communication and coalition building skills with an ability to balance, negotiate, and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders
  • Knowledge and understanding as it relates to program expansion, connecting programs to funding, creatively generating other resources, and building strategic partnerships
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a commitment to Go For Broke National Education Center's mission
  • Familiarity with the Japanese American experience during World War II
  • Knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas: communications/public information, nonprofit development, education, archives

Research and Cultivation of Partner/Donor Relationships

  • Work with the President/CEO to design and implement donor recognition programs, consistent communication, ensuring donors are informed about their partnership/stewardship of their Go For Broke National Education Center gifts and investments
  • Identifies and recruits new prospective funders to financially invest in the mission of Go For Broke National Education Center
  • Build longstanding relationships with key constituents, donors and foundations
  • Collaborate with the Hawaii Board of Directors and President/CEO to create a fund development plan that increases revenues to support the strategic direction of the organization

Working Conditions

  • Some travel within the United States/Hawaiian Islands and undertake some evening and weekend assignments/work.
  • Ability to work independently, with a high degree of discipline and follow up.
  • Consistent work/meetings in public and private locations
  • Required to work evenings and weekends during major campaigns and special events
