Go For Broke National Education Center – Los Angeles, California

Position: Office Manager/Development Assistant

Go For Broke National Education Center (GFBNEC) is an educational nonprofit, with the mission to educate and inspire character and equality in all Americans through teaching about the virtue and valor of our World War II American veterans of Japanese ancestry. GFBNEC has a robust Education and Exhibits Department, dedicated to preserving and sharing this important history. In May of 2016, GFBNEC opened a new leading-edge educational exhibition about the Japanese American soldier legacy within the broader context of the Japanese American experience of World War II. The 3,800 square foot permanent exhibition examines this chapter of history from a contemporary perspective that incorporates issues facing our communities and nation today. The exhibition is located in the historic Nishi Hongwanji Building in the Little Tokyo Historic District of Los Angeles.

Major Responsibilities

The Office Manager/Development Assistant at Go For Broke National Education Center (GFBNEC) is a mission-focused, detail-oriented, seasoned, process minded team member with experience in facilities management, database management, volunteer coordination, office management, event planning, and especially strong administrative skills. This person has great people skills, high emotional intelligence and also able to deliver measurable, cost-effective results. This person will have the following attributes:

  • Strong communication and people skills, both verbally and in writing, as well as the ability to successfully multi-task and collaborate with others
  • Establish and maintain long term professional relationships with staff, volunteers, donors, partners and sponsors
  • Assist and provide support to other staff or department if required
  • Be detail-oriented and organized
  • Be outgoing and communicate effectively with a variety of people
  • A professional demeanor and the highest level of discretion is essential in the management of confidential information


  • Overseeing all aspects of facilities management in regard to the office, Monument, Exhibition, including security, repairs, maintenance, housekeeping, and supply inventory for all facilities
  • Preparing documents related to facility usage, construction, maintenance, etc.
  • Project management and supervising and coordinating the work of contractors, cleaners, landscapers, maintenance workers, etc.
  • Calculating and comparing costs for required goods or services to achieve maximum value for money
  • Maintain facilities and equipment in good operating condition, including maintenance of facilities, but not limited to: simple repairs, equipment assembly, changing light bulbs, etc.
  • Directing, coordinating and planning essential central services such as security, maintenance, mail, cleaning, catering, waste disposal, recycling, etc.
  • Ensuring the building meets health and safety requirements and that facilities comply with lease agreements, policies, legislation and ensure staff safety and possible liability problems by assuring safe facilities
  • Responding appropriately to emergencies or urgent issues regarding facilities/physical plant

Office Management/Administration

  • Order and maintain office supplies and office furniture
  • Maintain file records for all facilities, volunteers, office, and events
  • Oversee all merchandise orders and sales of merchandise
  • Oversee all aspects of office equipment, including but not limited to printer/copier, office printers, shredders, etc.
  • Oversee all organizational incoming and outgoing mailings and postage
  • Manages established procedures for retention, protection, retrieval, transfer, and disposal of records related to facilities


  • Coordinate all logistics of the events (pre and post) to ensure efficiency, effectiveness and maintain a standard of quality that GFBNEC is known to provide
  • Update and maintain Raiser’s Edge donor records; data entry, notes and reports
  • Procure in-kind donations for events to reduce fundraising costs
  • Maintain and coordinate development master calendar
  • Works closely with staff to publicize events
  • Assist with coordination and execution of special events
  • Provide administrative support for mass mailings, newsletters, reports and development campaigns
  • Responsible for Membership tracking, mailing and correspondence
  • Sponsorship research, cultivation and solicitation
  • Recruit and manage development volunteers to assist with projects
  • Support department with donor relations
  • Assist with special projects as assigned

Event Assistance

  • Provide support for events
  • Organize twice monthly Veteran Gatherings
  • Ensure that all room and event setups are completed as listed in the reservation database
  • Ensure the setup tables, chairs, staging, clean up etc. is completed as necessary to meet the needs of the staff or guest
  • Address (and anticipate if possible) all facility or equipment problems

Volunteer Management

  • Supervision of new and ongoing organizational volunteers for related tasks
  • Coordinate and schedule volunteers on an ongoing basis or organize single events
  • Maintain calendar for scheduling volunteers and volunteer opportunities

Anticipated Time Commitment

  • Full-time with occasional weekend and evening work will be required
  • Participation in meetings/training: regular attendance at staff meetings, committee meetings and team meetings as needed

Required Qualifications

  • B.A./B.S. degree from accredited college or university
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to articulate a value proposition efficiently and effectively to a broad range of audiences
  • Proficient in the use of the following computer programs: Word, Excel, Raisers Edge, PowerPoint, E-mail, and Internet
  • Experience in Non-Profit organizations
  • Experience with executive level administration

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Raiser’s Edge and/or graphics programs
  • Experience in fundraising, marketing or communication within a non-profit organization

Working Conditions

  • Some travel within the Los Angeles area and undertake some evening and weekend assignments/work
  • Consistent work in an office environment
  • Ability to work independently, with a high degree of discipline and follow up
  • Consistent work/meetings in public and private locations
  • Required to work evenings and weekends during major campaigns and special events

Organizational Background:
The Go For Broke National Education Center was established in 1989 to preserve, perpetuate and share the legacy of Japanese American soldiers who served in World War II, even as their families were imprisoned in incarceration centers throughout the United States. Each year, thousands of people visit the Go For Broke Monument in downtown Los Angeles that bears the names of 16,000 of these patriots. GFBNEC has taught over 3,000 teachers across the country, who in turn have shared the Go For Broke story with over 100,000 students, and its Hanashi Oral History Program has recorded over 1,200 veteran interviews, making it the largest collection of its kind in the world. On May 28, 2016, the organization is schedule to open a leading edge and innovative interpretive exhibit that shares the distinguished record of the Japanese American military units of World War II, the unconstitutional imprisonment of their families, and the relevance of those experiences to contemporary issues.
