I am fighting for the right of transgender Americans in all stages of their transition to be allowed to enlist and serve openly in all branches of our country's military.
I am transgender. I started my mission because I wanted to join the Coast Guard, but our military bans transgender individuals from serving. I noticed that there were no petitions urging the military to change this discriminatory policy, so I started one myself on change.org.
The battle for transgender equality in the military is not over. It really does take courage to take on something so close to my heart. My advice for young people like me is to take it day by day and stay active in your community. We ourselves need to change what we want to see changed in the world.
