Question #27 Question #27 on the “Loyalty Questionnaire” asked if an individual would willingly serve as a combat soldier, nurse, or in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps. Because serving in the armed forces would mean that the individual had to leave his or her family behind in the incarceration center, many found the question extremely difficult to answer.
Question #28 Question #28 on the “Loyalty Questionnaire” asked if an individual would swear “unqualified allegiance to the United States” and “forswear any form of allegiance or obedience to the Japanese emperor” or to any other foreign government. The question was fraught for many, who thought that “yes” might indicate a previous allegiance to Japan. For many Issei, they believed that a “yes” answer would render them stateless as they were denied US citizenship.
